Kaduna Govt Pays Compensation to Zaria Flood, Erosion Project Victims
The Kaduna State Government has continued the payment of compensation to persons affected by the 11.6-kilometre Zaria Flood and Gully Erosion Control Project being implemented under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) programme.
The Member representing Zaria Kewaye Constituency in the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Hon. Engr. Isa Haruna Ihamo, disclosed this on Thursday following the latest compensation exercise conducted on Tuesday.
According to him, the compensation covers lands, structures, economic trees and crops affected by the project.
He said the payment was part of the government’s commitment to ensuring that persons whose properties and means of livelihood are affected by the project are duly compensated.
The lawmaker explained that the beneficiaries had expressed appreciation to the Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, for fulfilling his commitment to compensate affected persons before the full implementation of the project.
He said the beneficiaries also pledged their cooperation and support towards the successful completion of the project, which is aimed at addressing the recurring challenges of flooding and gully erosion in parts of Zaria.
Hon. Ihamo described the intervention as an indication of the state government’s commitment to protecting lives and property while providing infrastructure capable of addressing the effects of flooding and environmental degradation.
He added that the project would help improve the safety and living conditions of residents in communities affected by erosion and flooding.
The 11.6-kilometre project is being implemented through ACReSAL and is designed to control gully erosion, improve drainage and reduce the impact of flooding in affected communities.
The intervention includes the construction and improvement of drainage channels and other erosion-control measures aimed at protecting residential areas, roads, farmlands and other properties from the effects of uncontrolled water flow.
The payment is expected to strengthen cooperation between the government, project stakeholders and affected communities, while enabling the project to proceed with minimal disruption to residents.
Residents and community representatives have also been encouraged to continue supporting the project and cooperating with the implementing agencies to ensure its successful completion.
The Zaria flood and gully erosion control intervention is expected to contribute to improved environmental management, protection of communities and property, and greater resilience to flooding and other climate-related challenges in the area.
